The first few sessions is about getting to know the therapist and understanding your situation and concerns, and to determine the best course of action. During assessment you will be asked for:
Basic personal information
A history of your emotional, physical, and mental health as well as your experience of medication
Information pertaining to potential risks in your life currently
Information regarding previous therapy you may have engaged in.
Family history
Current life circumstances
Factors that you consider supportive.
Other relevant issues that may arise
Once this stage of the assessment is complete a problem list relating to your life. These problems are then sorted in categories and given a rating which is based on importance to the client. A goal list follows from the problems list and the goals will determine the direction of therapy.
This direction may include the use of a specific form of therapy or a combination of approaches including CBT, IFS, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EMDR, and Mindfulness.
